HOW WE BUILT A READING CULTURE

Updated: Jun 9, 2022

Here at Belgrave we are passionate about reading and developing a love of books. Over the last couple of years we have worked closely with LitFilmFest, and in particular their Reading Rocks project (supported by author, Michael Rosen) which allowed us to ignite a passion around reading. We were able to link the children's love of technology with reading, which suddenly made it very exciting.

Once the children realised that writing a book review meant that they could become YouTubers and record and edit videos using Adobe Spark, we were inundated with requests!

Teachers noticed that the children were borrowing more books from class libraries, parents commented on the enthusiasm that their children were beginning to show around reading, and there was a real buzz around school.

This excitement only increased when they realised that the reviews were being shared in libraries across the city.

It has been amazing to develop the culture of reading across the school and we are thrilled to be continuing with the project this year.

Our Belgrave Book Review Posters

These posters are placed around school, in corridors and class libraries, and include a QR code that links to the video book review. Children are able to scan the codes using their iPads.

In all Stoke-on-Trent Libraries!

Here is one of our reviewers proudly standing next to her poster in Longton library.
