READING
WHY READ?
Reading is a fundamental skill and it is vital that children become fluent and confident readers.
We strive to instill a love of reading in all children at Belgrave St Bartholomew's Academy, ensuring that they have access to a range of text types and genres.

We aim to encourage passionate and curious readers, equipped with the strategies they need to overcome any barriers they may face.
HOW WE BUILT A READING CULTURE
Since 2019 we have been proud to work with LitFilmFest to build a reading culture in our school using their Reading Rocks Review project.
Take a look at the video to the right, to see how engaged and excited the children have been to create their own Belgrave Book Reviews that led to them becoming their local library heroes and YouTube stars!
HOME READING SUPPORT
We ask that you read at home at least three times per week to support your child's progression in reading. Every child has a home reading book allocated to them.
If your child is taught phonics (Nursery - Y2) they will have a phonically decodable book linked to the Essential Letters and Sounds (ELS) programme. Please refer to the videos and ELS sounds mat for the pronunciation of sounds.
Children in Y2-Y6, progress through coloured book bands. Please refer to the Book Band guidance if you need more information.
Children in Y5 and Y6, who are fluent readers, free read. They select their own home reading book based on the genres that they enjoy.
When you listen to your child read, please discuss the book with them and ask them questions about what they have read. Please watch the video to see an example of how to support your child at home with their reading book. For the Urdu translated video click HERE.
There are some examples of questions for children in EYFS/KS1 and KS2 in the links above.
50 RECOMMENDED READS
BOOM READER (FORMERLY KNOWN AS GO READ)
It's important that all parents/carers sign up to Boom Reader as soon as possible, so you can record your child's home reading as we will no longer be bringing home a paper reading record.
If you haven't signed up yet, please speak to your child's class teacher who will be able to provide you with an invitation.
Please watch our top tips videos which provide useful information on how to set up an account and how to start logging what your child has read.
In school, children in Y1-Y6 are completing their reading for pleasure challenges. The purpose of the challenges are to continue to develop our reading culture and to enthuse the children in reading. We would love for you to complete some of the challenges at home with your child - let us know which ones you complete!
